The National Parks of Abruzzo and Majella are the wildest and most authentic Italian reserves. They are the home of wolves and brown bears. Wolves in Italy were endangered until the end of the last decade. Now protected, they have found their shelter in these two parks, among woods and high mountain meadows. But the appeal of this land goes further. Besides the natural beauty of the land, Abruzzo is a region full of history and culture. Here you will find and have the possibility to visit an impressive number of hermitage grottos of the middle age. The city of Sulmona and the small towns of Caramanico and Scanno still retain many artistic and historical marks from many dominations, from the Roman period to the Middle Age. Ancient popular traditions and the excellent local cuisine will help you discover the wonderful land of Abruzzo, a land of ancient traditions, wild nature and friendly people.

Highlights:
- Sulmona, elegant city of art and guardian of the passage of Civilization
- The villages of Scanno Villalago and Sulmona, classed in the register of the most beautiful villages in Italy
- The village of Decontra, where time stopped 100 years ago and where we will sleep two nights in a family farm

After breakfast transfer to Decontra, a small shepherds’ village built of stones and timber on a plateau overlooking the gorge of the Orfento river. Abruzzo is a region with strong religious traditions, the stiff mountains here hide hundreds of monks’ hermitages. Check in at a-more-than-family-run farm and start of our hike. Today we discover one of the best-known and most guarded hermitages, the one of S. Bartolomeo and his church and his modest room carved into the bare rock near a stream. This mystical place was chosen by Pope Celestine V and his followers during the Thirteenth Century. Way back to the farm where we will enjoy our dinner sharing our table with the family who host us. Over the centuries, its flow action dug the spectacular "Gorges Orfento", became a strictly controlled nature reserve as the host of wildlife and flora among the richest of all Italy. Splendid beech woods and flower fields blooming on the river banks. The colorful steep cliffs protect the ecosystem of the gorge. We will end our loop at our farm in Decontra.
