Como Lake and Bernina Alps

Discover the most beautiful Italian lake and the Swiss Alps in one exciting trip. In Roman times the crossroads between Lake Como and the Swiss Alps was fundamental for trade and cultural exchange. The Bernina Pass and the Maloja Pass were the ancient ways from Northern Europe to Milan area. From the charming and elegant Lake Como, with the picturesque villages of Bellagio and Varenna, we move to the Bernina Alpine Chain, riding on the UNESCO heritage Red train, the Bernina Express - a train that climbs the mountain! Staying in the lake region in St. Moritz, the discovery of the glacier will lead our walking in the most spectacular valleys of the area. The "Mediterranean" atmosphere of the lake with olives and lemon fields is in stark contrast to the glacier environment of the Swiss "Engadina" lake region.

Highlights:
- The wilderness of the Italian Pre Alps and the Bernina Alpine Range
- The picturesque villages around Lake Como: Bellagio, Varenna and Lenno.
- A stunning trip to the Swiss glaciers on the Bernina Express Train, a UNESCO World Heritage Route.

lago di comoDay 3: Val Perlana and S. Benedetto Abbey (5hrs 30min walking, +700m -700m)

From olive fields through chestnut forests to the "Abbey of St. Benedict", an architectural gem dating from the Romanesque period. Dinner in pizzeria and overnight in Hotel in Bellagio. Meals (B,D)structure-separateur-horizontal-dot
4 The wanderer Trail andrea mezzaniDay 4: The Wanderer Path (4hr 30min walking, +400m –400m)
The village of Varenna is the target for today. Lovely walk on the "Sentiero del Viandante" (wanderer path), one of the historical coastal pathways of the lake, bringing us through pretty terraced landscape to the village of Bellano, where we can admire the incredible "Canyon of Bellano", excavated by the river Pioverna for centuries. Dinner not included and overnight Hotel in Bellagio. Meals (B)structure-separateur-horizontal-dot
5 Bernina Express Panorama andrea mezzaniDay 5: The Bernina Express and Lake Staz (3hrs walking, +200m -200m)
From the town of Tirano, located in the heart of the Valtellina valley, we catch the Bernina Express. The Red Train, travelling on the Bernina Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded in 1910, and is considered the highest railway in Europe. The amazing red train show will start at the huge Lake Poschiavo set among pine and larch, arriving in the face of the Piz Palu Glacier, the beginning of our discovery of the Bernina Mountain Group. A gentle hike will take us to the fabulous Lej da Staz. Dinner in typical restaurant and overnight in Hotel*** in St. Moritz. Meals (B, D)structure-separateur-horizontal-dot

The Maloja pass was one of the most important passes for the Roman trading of raw materials travelling to the area surrounding Milan. Today's hike is just spectacular: from incredible waterfalls to the small alpine lake of "Longhin". From the "Longhin Pass" at 2645m, the view takes in all the Bernina Group and the granite peaks of the Bregaglia Valley, considered the Italian Yosemite. Dinner not included and overnight in Hotel*** in St. Moritz. Meals (B).structure-separateur-horizontal-dot

Today we will meet the Bernina Glacier! Thanks to the long Roseg Valley, populated by the golden eagle and the alpine mountain goat, we'll meet the glaciers: the first of the Bernina Group are the Caputschin, the Piz Roseg and the Piz Glousciant. After a quite steep path we reach the mountain hut "Chavanna Tschierva", from where we can admire the Bernina Piz (and the Biancograt, the legendary ice ridge used to climb to top of the Bernina). I went on this trip 3 weeks ago and I can’t believe how well planned it was. The guide were amazing and thought of every little detail
It must be hard for a guide to herd a group through a trip that includes many miles of beautifully scenic mountain hiking, transit by van, ferry, and scenic rail, rustic restaurants and city dining... but Genny made it all look effortless. Her geology degree helped her keep our group of amateur naturalists informed and entertained. The food was mostly great to fantastic.

We loved Italy and didn't want to leave. The trip was fantastic! this was the first group hiking trip we have done and it was really a great experience. We hiked in heaven. The guides were wonderful, and really handled all the details so that we could just enjoy the trip. The others in our group were from all over the U.S. and it was fun to get to know them as we hiked in some of the most beautiful areas in the world! The activity level was challenging but very rewarding and inspiring.
Chiara (our Lead guide) was the LIGHT for our trip. She was so joyful and pleasant. She could not have been better. These two ladies were so sweet and so friendly. They were very enthusiastic and went along with all of our silliness. They were very knowledgeable about the terrain, the culture, the hikes and were just all around terrific to be with all week.

I'm sure we will have more time to chat, but the Lake Como experience was out of this world. I had such an amazing time, and I couldn't have asked for a better group of travelers and guides to explore The Alps with. We had virtually no cloud coverage (sneak peak pictures attached!), and everyone was so pleasant and inspiring.

I look forward to chatting more in person!
