Discover the most beautiful Italian lake and the Swiss Alps in one exciting trip. In Roman times the crossroads between Lake Como and the Swiss Alps was fundamental for trade and cultural exchange. The Bernina Pass and the Maloja Pass were the ancient ways from Northern Europe to Milan area. From the charming and elegant Lake Como, with the picturesque villages of Bellagio and Varenna, we move to the Bernina Alpine Chain, riding on the UNESCO heritage Red train, the Bernina Express - a train that climbs the mountain! Staying in the lake region in St. Moritz, the discovery of the glacier will lead our walking in the most spectacular valleys of the area. The "Mediterranean" atmosphere of the lake with olives and lemon fields is in stark contrast to the glacier environment of the Swiss "Engadina" lake region.
- The wilderness of the Italian Pre Alps and the Bernina Alpine Range
- The picturesque villages around Lake Como: Bellagio, Varenna and Lenno.
- A stunning trip to the Swiss glaciers on the Bernina Express Train, a UNESCO World Heritage Route.
Meeting in the afternoon with the Guide at Milan Train Station. Train/bus to Bellagio, a lovely village facing the lake, known worldwide for the charm and elegance of its villas. Dinner in a typical restaurant and overnight in Hotel*** in Bellagio. Meals (D)
Today we walk to the high pastures of Mt. S. Primo Natural Park. The peak overlooks the entire lake and the mythical Grigne, a massif similar to the Dolomites. During the brightest days the panorama stretches across the entire Alpine arch. Wine and cheese tasting with products from Valtellina. Dinner not included and overnight in Hotel in Bellagio. Meals (B)
We head to the lakeside village of Lenno. Along the ancient Via Crucis, built by master Comacine, our walk takes us to the "Santa Maria del Soccorso" abbey, a UNESCO Heritage Site. From olive fields through chestnut forests to the "Abbey of St. Benedict", an architectural gem dating from the Romanesque period. Dinner in pizzeria and overnight in Hotel in Bellagio. Meals (B,D)
The village of Varenna is the target for today. Lovely walk on the "Sentiero del Viandante" (wanderer path), one of the historical coastal pathways of the lake, bringing us through pretty terraced landscape to the village of Bellano, where we can admire the incredible "Canyon of Bellano", excavated by the river Pioverna for centuries. Dinner not included and overnight Hotel in Bellagio. Meals (B)
From the town of Tirano, located in the heart of the Valtellina valley, we catch the Bernina Express. The Red Train, travelling on the Bernina Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded in 1910, and is considered the highest railway in Europe. The amazing red train show will start at the huge Lake Poschiavo set among pine and larch, arriving in the face of the Piz Palu Glacier, the beginning of our discovery of the Bernina Mountain Group. A gentle hike will take us to the fabulous Lej da Staz. Dinner in typical restaurant and overnight in Hotel*** in St. Moritz. Meals (B, D)
The Maloja pass was one of the most important passes for the Roman trading of raw materials travelling to the area surrounding Milan. Today's hike is just spectacular: from incredible waterfalls to the small alpine lake of "Longhin". From the "Longhin Pass" at 2645m, the view takes in all the Bernina Group and the granite peaks of the Bregaglia Valley, considered the Italian Yosemite. Dinner not included and overnight in Hotel*** in St. Moritz. Meals (B).
Today we will meet the Bernina Glacier! Thanks to the long Roseg Valley, populated by the golden eagle and the alpine mountain goat, we'll meet the glaciers: the first of the Bernina Group are the Caputschin, the Piz Roseg and the Piz Glousciant. After a quite steep path we reach the mountain hut "Chavanna Tschierva", from where we can admire the Bernina Piz (and the Biancograt, the legendary ice ridge used to climb to top of the Bernina). Dinner in a typical restaurant and overnight in Hotel*** in St. Moritz. Meals (B,D).
